Workshop: Tender Stones

As part of our inaugural exhibition as a community interest company, we are delivering a series of workshops in schools and community settings.

The workshop led by Lucy Suggate and Charlie Ford concentrates on the technique of frottage – transferring surface patterns and textures on to paper. The workshop will help you turn paper into stone!

Everyone is welcome – whether you’re curious about art, art is a hobby, you’re studying art, you’re just starting out on an arts career, or you’re already a professional artist.

During the workshop, you will look at simple mark making, how repetition can create meditation, sounds and rhythms. Working with graphite onto paper, you will create the first phase of transformation by coating and imprinting a metallic-like texture onto the paper, followed by sculpting using actions to shape and mould paper into stones that become both heavy and light, fragile and robust.

The workshop is delivered in three sections:

Section 1: Frottage (rubbing) and mark-making with graphite onto paper over a stone.

Section 2: Sculpting Process – transforming the paper rubbing into a stone.

Section 3: Arranging and placing stones into a collective arrangement, to make a very temporary installation in the space (if time). Participants can leave with their finished work, which can be both an object and a drawing.
